Intelligence Community

Mission:

To work separately and collaboratively as a federation of 17 executive branch agencies and components to conduct intelligence activities necessary for the protection of U.S. national security. The Intelligence Community (IC) activities include, but are not limited to: collection of information needed by the President, the National Security Council, the Secretaries of State and Defense, other Executive Branch officials and policy makers; production, analysis and dissemination of intelligence; collection of information concerning, and the conduct of activities to protect against, intelligence activities directed against the U.S., international terrorist and international narcotics activities, and other hostile activities directed against the U.S. by foreign powers, organizations, persons, and their agents; administrative and support activities within the U.S. and abroad necessary for the performance of authorized activities; and other intelligence activities as the President directs. The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) serves as the head of the Intelligence Community (IC) overseeing, directing, and integrating the implementation of the National Intelligence Program and acting as the principal advisor to the President, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council on intelligence matters related to national security.

IC agencies and components are located nationwide and overseas.

Recruitment Program / Outreach Efforts

The ODNI has begun to integrate the separate recruiting efforts of the various IC agencies and components, coordinating campus and other recruiting activities. Under a common IC brand and using standardized IC materials, joint recruiting teams are now able to extend their reach into more campuses and other recruiting venues, offering candidates who may have had an interest in a particular IC organization information on a much wider variety of intelligence career options. Over the next five years the ODNI will lead efforts across the IC to: attract, recruit and retain a diverse workforce; integrate recruitment efforts across the IC Leverage technology to enhance recruitment efforts; identify and hire talent before graduation; streamline the clearance process

Hiring Projections

The IC’s mission requires some of the most difficult-to-find skills: for example, fluency in some of the most esoteric and complex foreign languages, deep expertise in foreign cultures, and mastery of one-of-a-kind technologies. By definition, individuals with these skills are in extremely short supply and competition for them is keen. The IC generally fares well in that competition, but in many cases, there simply is not enough “clearable” talent to meet our needs. One way of getting an edge in this competition is to develop human capital pipelines that extend far beyond the IC. IC projects it will hire approximately 5,500 individuals in FY 2010 and thousands more in subsequent years. The IC offers opportunities worldwide and seeks highly qualified individuals to support various mission areas, including: analysis; clandestine services; engineering; geography/cartography; graphics/multimedia/publication/photography; facilities services; information technology and management; legal services; library services; logistics management; medical services; science, technology and weapons; and security.
