To increase homeownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing, free from discrimination. The Department of Housing and Urban Development funds public housing projects, enforces equal housing laws and insures and finances mortgages.

HUD anticipates significant use of the Federal Career Intern Program and the Presidential Management Fellows Program to replace staff losses. The agency also participates in OPM-sponsored job fairs that are held throughout the country.
In FY 2007, HUD granted 179 student loan repayments totaling nearly $600,000 and 1 recruitment bonus totaling $15,000.
HUD’s hiring priorities will be in four major program areas: community planning and development, housing, fair housing and equal opportunity, and public/Indian housing. Specific occupational areas that will be in demand are program management and financial analysts; community planning and development professionals; equal opportunity compliance specialists; appraisers; grants management; and housing program specialists.
