The Department of Education establishes policies on and manages the funds for federal financial aid programs, collects and disseminates data on America's schools and focuses national attention on educational issues.

The Department of Education ranked 27th out of 30 agencies in the 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings with an index score of 56.4.
The Department of Education will continue to participate in the following major outreach events: Peace Corps Career Fair; Presidential Management Fellow Career Fair; Federal Career Intern Program; ED-sponsored career fairs at colleges/universities; OPM-sponsored Federal Career Day Fairs; National Urban League; Blacks in Government (BIG); Targeted Disability Agencies/Advocacy Groups; Hispanic/Asian Diversity Recruitment Outreach; and USAJOBS Web site. As part of the department's Corporate Recruitment Strategy, other outreach and recruitment activities will be added to ensure the recruitment of a high-quality workforce.
To help attract top quality candidates, four individuals received student loan repayments in FY 2007 and 2008 totaling $21,000. One recruitment bonus was approved during that same time period totaling $5,000.
Over the next few years, the Department of Education will focus its recruitment efforts on filling vacancies in several key occupations. These include: accountant, auditor, attorney, financial management analyst, equal opportunity specialist, management/program analyst, investigator, educational program and vocational rehabilitation specialists, and information technology specialist. A significant number of equal opportunity specialists, auditors and investigators are located throughout the ten regions.
